Roy Wenzl

Reporter, Photographer, Editor and Author for the Wichita Eagle.


The Business of Storytelling

Roy Wenzl has been with the Wichita Eagle for 21 years.  In addition to writing hundreds of memorable stories for the newspaper, Roy was the primary author of the 2007 book “Bind, Torture, Kill; The Inside Story of the Serial Killer Next Door.”  He was also the primary author of the 2013 book “The Miracle of Father Kapaun.” Three of Roy’s serial narratives, “Saving Dad,” “Hope City” and “BTK’S Daughter” were published in Reader’s Digest.  In 1981, Roy was part of the news team at the Kansas City Star and Times that won a 1982 Pulitzer prize for coverage of the Hyatt Hotel skywalks collapse.

Roy has won many national newspaper journalism awards.  He has taught writing in newsrooms, university classrooms, National Writers Workshops and the American Press Institute.

Roy attended Kansas State University and has a degree in Journalism.  He grew up on a farm in Washington County.  His family still operates the farm.
